Insight into RSS technology

The Redundant Speed Supply is capable of monitoring multiple PTC-redundant axle counter inputs and automatically selecting between channels for output transmission via microprocessor-based health assessment of the inputs. There are two completely independent axle channels, each capable of supporting either a passive pickup probe connection on one set of pins or an active probe input on another set of pins. Axle channels are electrically isolated from each other, and from the resulting output axle drive to the TMC. The axle interfaces support 5 to 12VDC active probes, and the output axle drives will support a 12VDC active output into a 5kΩ load. Multiple axle outputs are supported, each with multiple pins for different speed selections.

Flexibility in Energy Management

The RSS is Ethernet enabled to allow optional configuration of additional parameters that can improve the decision-making capabilities of the axle health detection logic based on available PTC data such as GPS movement.

The Ethernet ports can also be configured to produce speed status information, such as a failed axle input, to upstream PTC equipment/network points. The RSS also supports an optional failover relay such that, when unpowered, the RSS will physically pass through the primary channel input to the primary output.
